Physical Appearance/Clothing/Armor: Roland wears plate mail armor as well as chainmail. Rarely will you see him in anything else. He dislikes pomp and show, so his armor is designed to be practical.
Basic Persona: Roland is an ambitious man and experienced soldier. He's not very elegant in conversation, but he knows how to taunt and ridicule and can sing a good tavern song while drinking the next man under the table. Soldiering is his life. He enjoys fighting and the accolades that come with victory. A skilled tactician, he knows how to turn a battle to his advantage by making use of terrain, weather, and numbers. He grows bored during peacetime and is always looking to engage in some form of conflict. Unlike some generals, however, he's the kind of leader who will get down and dirty. He doesn't sit back and direct a battle from the sidelines, but rides out with the front lines. Naturally, this makes him something of pompous asshole, but he's a no nonsense guy and well respected by those that serve under his command. He loathes Vincent Markovin and views Mordishant as a young, impetuous upstart.
Basic History: Roland was born in Auraton in the late 3050s. His father was a mercenary and, between campaigns, he taught his son how to fight. Roland became a talented brawler and learned how to wield both sword and axe effectively. Before he was old enough to join the mercenary troops, he spent several summers wrestling and managed to win a few provincial championships. He enjoyed the notoriety and this fueled his competitive spirit. As a mercenary, he became an expert shield fighter and favored the quick, brutal melee of close combat using a short sword or dagger. He was lethal on the battlefield and his ability to discern an enemy's tactics soon brought him praise from his superiors.
By the time he was 30, he'd organized his own group of men-at-arms and was in demand as a general for hire. His exploits brought him to the attention of the Dominion and he was invited to join the organization. When Sirin Althenore rose to prominence, Roland supported him and later became leader of the Third Legion.
