Jule Villeen
Personality: Jule prefers the simple life and doesn't care for material goods. He can be polite when the situation dictates, but often he appears informal and is aindifferent to how he appears to to others. For example, he would feel comfortable attending a wedding in his herb-hunting attire. Jule lives among nature and seeks social interaction in urban areas. He isn't talkative; he is self conscious of his speech and enunciation when conversing with non-Scalathi Calamians. He is personable and empathetic with those who seek medical help. He is not afraid to try new things, sometimes without common sense or regard for personal safety. While he is not violent, he understands that brute force may be necessary in some situations. Anything unnatural (e.g., vampires) is cause for suspicion and alarm.
History: Jule was hatched in a farm just outside of Jultul. He was one of two hatchlings, the other being his brother Lawe. His sister Jem was hatched eleven years later. The three Villeen offspring grew up on their family farm tended by their mother, Arianna, and father, Esai. They grew enough crops to sustain the family, selling or trading the surplus in Jultul. The income was enough to make for a comfortable living, but the family was not wealthy.
The family farm was located amidst a dense forest and a short walk from a river. During his childhood and when he wasn't tending the farm, Jule learned to appreciate and love nature, as do the majority of Scalathi. The woodlands and water had been his laboratory, the vegetation and animals his subjects. He never hesitated to experiment on himself as well, and this had resulted in an unusually high rate of illness in a Scalathi child. None had been too serious however, and the lessons on physiology, medicine, and anatomy he gained while on the farm were invaluable during his mandatory service in the military.
Lawe was not interested in Jule's wilderness pursuits, and he spent most of his time on the farm itself or, particularly as he approached adulthood, in Jultul. Unlike Lawe, Jem spent her childhood working with her mother or playing with Jule in the woods and river. Because of his siblings' respective interests, Jule became closer to his sister rather than brother.
Jule and Lawe enlisted in the army shortly after their seventeenth birthday. Jule showed remarkable medical knowledge for a 17-year-old, and was therefore trained as a medic. He also learned to use both half-spears and full length spears. He preferred the former because he could strap them to his sides and free up his hands. He became adept at spear throwing, depending on this skill for hunting prey when he left the army. Jule's primary interest remained saving lives however, unlike Lawe who took to the battle and would remain with the army when service was no longer mandatory.
Jule left the army, and his brother, and returned home. By then, his sister had married and moved into Jultul. Jule began spending more time in the city to visit his sister and sell medicines. Because the city was open to other Calamians, Jule learned to appreciate and communicate with non-Scalathi, much moreso than his brethren in other cities and villages.
