Zabel is a very bitter individual. He tends to be very aggressive and unleashed in battle, more like a berserker than a monk, but it seems to fit well with him. When in a non-combat situation he is very serious and almost anti-social. In fact, the only people he is even slightly open towards are the monks who trained him and occasionally women. In his eyes there is always a burning anger however, and only daily meditation keeps his dark side in check. He thinks of life in a constant struggle between good and evil, both outwardly and inwardly, and he constantly tries to do the right thing (even though he fails quite often). He can be very intimidating and treats battle as much as a mind game as a physical one. Zabel believes the best way to defeat an opponent is to first strike fear in his/her heart, and that shadows are a more useful weapon than any sword. He fights uninhibited and mixes unleashed aggression with acrobatics and martial arts.
Those who get to know Zabel will soon realize there are multiple sides to him. Sometimes he can come across as extremely thoughtful and sensitive, and other times he can seem very crude and insulting. If he likes somebody, he will be very shy and awkward and almost put aside his demonic nature, but otherwise he's sarcastic and can be downright mean. Part of this dual nature around people is owing to the fact that he experiences an inner voice which always seems to be trying to convince him to do the "bad" thing, something which Zabel is constantly fighting against.
Zabel's father was a powerful Forsaken necromancer named Khahadi who was intending to perform a dark ritual in order to gain power from the Dark Lord. His father raided a human village and kidnapped three recently married women in order to sacrifice them, but the ritual required that they be pregnant. Two of the women were already pregnant as Khahadi had hoped, but the third named Jamanya was not. Khahadi raped her repeatedly in order to impregnate her, but before he could confirm it and begin the ritual a small band of crusaders attacked in order to defeat Khahadi and rescue the women. They succeeded in driving him away, and rescued the women.
After Zabel was born, his mother's husband left her because she refused to abandoned what he referred to as "a demonspawn", and Jamanya was left to raise Zabel alone. While growing up she constantly had to hide him and protect him from villagers since Zabel's skin tone and features left little doubt in people's mind that he was the child of the evil necromancer who had attacked them years ago. At the age of eleven, three drunk humans raided his home and his mother was struck in the temple with a thrown stone that killed her. The dark heritage in Zabel rose, and he killed all three humans with a pitchfork before running away never to return.
He eventually came to a monastery where he begged for asylum from his crime. The master monk took pity on him, and trained him for over a decade in the ways of a warrior monk. Zabel quickly learned and became one of the fiercest fighters the monastery had ever produced, but upon turning 22 the master monk told him that due to Zabel's dark side and violent nature he would never achieve inner peace. They parted in good company as the master gave him his blessing to fight evil along the countryside as a warrior monk. The day Zabel left, his master presented him with a quarterstaff partially made from the bloody pitchfork he had still been holding when he first arrived at the monastery.
Since he left he met up with Tindle and her friends, Otaka and Adam. He joined
them, and refused to abandon Tindle (whom he was developing a crush on) after Otaka and Adam
both ran away. They attended an opera in Estessavale with Palenom Xirran, Chancellor of Estessavale,
and a local noble named Barrel Holvest. The results of the opera left Zabel wanted in Estessavale and
fleeing the city with Tindle, Barrel, and other companions they have met since.
